Abby is 4

Well it's happened, as it always does, my youngest is another year older. For her birthday party we had a Butterfly Birthday Party.
The invites were lollipop butterflies that I printed the info onto and cut out using my Silhouette. Each one included the kids names too but I left them off of these ones. Then added a lollipop, easy peasy!

Funny story, I shopped all year for butterflies knowing I would never find any in stores in December and wherever we put them when I brought them home in April we could not find them in December. So sure enough I was out shopping for butterflies on Dec. 16th. And I bought every butterfly the dollar stores had.
We have a real tree every year, love the smell, and decorated it with butterflies.

We made a butterfly mobile by wrapping the little girls' hula hoop with yellow crepe/streamer paper. Then we put a hook up in the middle of the ceiling and used 3 feather boas to hang it up. The little hanging butterflies were from the dollar store. This was my Kaylee's favorite decoration. She could not believe it was made from their hula hoop.

We had dress-up wings for all the kids. I had only bought wings for the girls but the boys all asked where theirs were, so I was able to round up some more. I don't know whether they just wanted to be a part of the theme or to be kind to Abby but they really got involved too.

We made chocolate cupcakes with white icing that we dyed pink, purple and blue.

The butterflies on top were made using wax melts or candy melts from the Bulk Barn. You put a handful of melts into a zip top plastic bag.

Place the bag into a bowl of hot water.

Once they've melted, you snip the tip off of the corner of one bag. Be ready to start right away as the melts will be runny. I printed off a sheet of butterflies that I wanted to outline. Then I cut a sheet of waxed paper about 8 1/2" x 11" and creased it down the middle. Then put your waxed paper over your printed page of butterflies and start tracing the butterflies with your icing. It helps to have a 2nd set of hands at this stage to hold your waxed paper flat. Also another tip I learned is to start at the top butterfly and work your way down or you could end up with icing on your sleeves :).

A sheet of 8 1/2" x 11" cardstock will support your waxed paper and your butterflies when you are done. You also need to crease it down the middle too. It is a good idea to tape your waxed paper to your cardstock at the edges so that your waxed paper doesn't roll up at the sides.

 

 

Into the freezer they go for at least 3 minutes. You'll need to prop up the sides with something, butter, ice cube trays, whatever else you have in the freezer. And you know they are done when they peel easily away from the waxed paper.

Then just place on the top of your iced cupcakes.



I used my Silhouette to make the 3D butterfly tube holder party favors. I put a tube of Lypsol (chapstick) into each. The little girls made the clothespin butterfly favors. They colored the clothespins and then filled a small plastic bag with gummy butterflies and treats. The clothespin clips in the middle of the plastic bag and a pipe cleaner makes some antennae.



Some dollar store plates, napkins and cups round out the table decorations.

All Good Things

Well we've made it. Our last challenge of the year for Crafting With Dragonflies and we're asking you to make a tag or tags. Perfect time of year don't you think? It's also my last challenge as a Dragonfly. I will miss the girls very much as we are all friends but I have got to spend some time on my scrapbooking. Course this time of year I'm busy planning a couple of birthday parties. One for my Abby and one for Jesus very shortly afterwards. I made a bottle tag using a Silhouette cut file cut from double sided cardstock. I printed my sentiment and image out on white cardstock and colored her using my Prismacolor pencils. I had to add some tights because most of Lindsay's Sassy girls wouldn't last 2 minutes in a Canadian Winter, lol, this one is called Santa Pin-Up. Some DecoArt Snow Writer was added to her fur for texture and dimension. I thought the sentiment worked well considering both the wine and the image ;)

I don't often talk about our weather because I know there are so many Canadian stereotypes out there that we all live in igloos and such but last Friday morning our school buses didn't run because of extreme windchill temperatures of below -40 Celsius. We were even -45 one morning with the wind chill. And do you know people were still out Christmas shopping that Saturday in droves? I guess the urge to cross some items off the list this busy time of year beat out the urge to hibernate. And we're in another extreme wind chill warning for tonight and tomorrow morning. Sure hope the girls can go to school, we get cabin fever pretty easily these days stuck at home and inside. Although I always make sure to save a few 'snow day' projects for just such occasions. Bugaboo Ornament

Hello all. Today at Crafting With Dragonflies we are asking you to make a Christmas ornament for the tree or wall. Our fabulous sponsor is Bugaboo Stamps and my image is Fancy SB Christmas. I mostly paper pieced her and then colored her using my Prismacolor pencils and lots of Stickles. There are some of my fellow Dragonflies that love their Liquid Pearls and never quite know where to stop Liquid Pearling...that's me and Stickles. Love them.
My ornament was a Silhouette cut file. It is almost like a card in that it is perforated at the top so that you can open it to add an image or photo if you'd like. I first cut it out of white cardstock and then again using my patterned paper which I glued onto the cardstock. I added Diamond Stickles to the swirls on the patterned paper on the front of my ornament. A wired gold ribbon bow at the top. And green and white twine as my hanger. Even included an authentic photo on one of our pine trees in the yard. Yep, we have snow here, but it hasn't gotten super cold yet. We've had a few really cold nights but thankfully the deep freeze hasn't taken a permanent hold yet. Having only a few minor anxiety attacks that we are less than a month until Christmas, so be sure to join us for our ornament challenge!

Mid-Week Reminder

I get to be the mid-week reminder card at Crafting With Dragonflies. Mostly because I had Internet connection problems last week and was unable to upload my card. But that's what happens when you are a part of the World Wide Web I guess. Our theme is to make a card using stick pins and things with wings.
I used a Hannah Lynn image from Crafts and Me, our sponsor this week, called Star of Wonder. I followed the sketch at Sketch N Stash (course I'm much to late to enter it now but if I'm going to make a card with layers I have to use a sketch). I colored her using Prismacolor pencils. A Martha Stewart glitter marker made the gold accents on the star, halo and bird. I used green feathers for her wings. I stitched all the layers with my sewing machine and the papers were from the Making Memories Twinkle paper pack. The Poinsettias were a Silhouette cut file but I used Glossy Accents and gold glitter to make the flower centers. 2 pearl stickpins finish off my card.

Crafty Places and Spaces

A little feature on our Crafting With Dragonflies blog has been to visit our Design Teams crafting rooms. In my case, rooms plural, is the correct description.
My kitchen houses the command center, lol. Actually it is my computer and Silhouette SD, which I use for EVERYTHING. My setup is quite clever really, we removed the bottom right cupboard and put in a sliding tray for my keyboard. My computer, monitor, and printer sit on top. My Silhouette is on a TV tray for easy connection to the computer.

My dining room has all my paper and tools storage and I use the dining room table for most of my cutting, gluing, crafting, etc. As you can see, another little desk has moved in there. The big window overlooks the river valley so we all like 'working' in there.

I am in the process of turning the former nursery into my craft room (that explains the Disney Babies on the wall). The Husband painted an old dresser that beautiful, bright, sunny yellow that will hold most of the papers and tools that are currently downstairs. I bought a computer armoire which will hold a laptop (if and when I get one) and my Silhouette. My sewing machine table is also in here now. The Husband also made a Murphy bed so that we can still use the room as a spare room for company but I can put it up and out of the way when I'm working in there.

You can see the pocket door in this photo. It goes into our bedroom and was very handy when this room was a nursery. The curtain covers a door out onto our second floor balcony. We painted the Disney Babies on the walls ourselves.

Just one funny story about my ribbon racks. I went to a garage sale where the lady was selling everything in her crafting room. She was moving to the UK and it was too expensive to ship much over there and she was moving into a small flat so she couldn't take much anyway. I don't know if you've seen the Ikea commercial where the woman looks at her receipt and runs through the parking lot shouting, "start the car" to her husband because she got such a good deal she felt like she stole it? That was me shopping in this lady's craft room. All the lovely racks filled with ribbon, embossing powders, containers full of brads...I felt bad for her having to sell her craft collection but I sure felt lucky I was in the right place at the right time.

There's a tour of my crafty spaces (and my house). I am blessed to have so many inspirational places and spaces to 'work'!
I've added a couple of cool pictures I took of our house this Fall just to give you an idea of why it is such an inspirational place to live :)

Too Many Possibilities

Our challenge this fortnight at Crafting With Dragonflies is to make your own flowers. Our sponsor is A and T Digital Designs. Now you would think with flowers and faeries I would have no trouble at all coming up with some inspiration for this one. That was the problem. I had so many little floaty ideas around in my head I couldn't pin any of them down, there were so many possibilities I was completely at a loss.
I found my sunflower image in the Silhouette store. The center looked like a perfect frame for my little faerie images. And I knew it had good shaping potential. But what to do with it? Well I finally settled on door hangers, don't ask me how because I'm not sure myself, lol. I cut the door hangers from heavier 110 pound cardstock. Then cut them out again in my dps. Ran my dp's through the embosser using D'vine Swirls embossing folder and through the Xyron to add adhesive. Put one on top of the other and I had 2 fairly decorative and sturdy door hangers. I colored my images with Prismacolor pencils. To shape my sunflowers I used the curved back of my plastic 1/32 tsp. measuring spoon (also known as a Smidgen). I also use a foam cutting mat, similar to a mouse pad, to rub the center of each flower petal with the back of my spoon. The result is lovely, curved flower petals. The banner is another Silhouette file that I printed the little girls' Teacher's names on. I've blurred out part of their names for privacy but you get the idea.

Miss O already has hers hanging on her classroom door and Miss H said that she loooooves faeries and how did we know?!? Funny how when our mojo flies out the window it can come back in as a door hanger...get it...when one door closes...nevermind ;o)

Hang In There

Our challenge this fortnight at Crafting With Dragonflies is a card with a nature theme, leaves, trees, you get the idea. A prize will be provided by our very own challenge blog owner Hilde.
I made a center step easel card. The card, image frame, trees and leaves are all Silhouette cut files. My image is a Tiddly Inks digi called Wryn - hanging around. I colored her with Prismacolor Pencils. First I used the offset feature in my Silhouette to make a mask of my image and then I took a cloud shape and placed it around inside the frame overlapping either the frame or image. The ones that overlapped the image I used the weld feature to weld them together. For the ones that overlapped the frame I used the subtract feature and moved the parts away that were not needed. Then I grouped them all together and cut out my mask. Took a little trial and error but I got a pretty good mask. I also took a screen shot of it so that if you could make sense of my description, lol.

I used Tim Holtz distress ink in Broken China to make my background blue.
A sunflower, maple leaf brads, some orange gingham ribbon and a raffia bow that I tied myself make up the rest of my embellishments. Will use this next time I need a Hang In There or Get Well Soon card.
On a more personal note, my Grandma celebrated her 99th birthday on Oct. 12th. We had a party for her on Oct. 13th. My youngest has a cold so she and Daddy had to stay home but my Kaylee and I were very blessed to be there for the celebration. She is a remarkable woman that still lives in her own apartment. You can also see Kaylee's little sling for her broken arm in this picture. Hope all my fellow Canadians had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend of good food and even better family time.

What A Week

This will be a short one, my oldest broke her arm at school yesterday and I am mentally and emotionally exhausted.
The challenge this fortnight at Crafting With Dragonflies is to make a gift box/folder with at least 3 cards. We are sponsored by Di's Digis and my images are from our other sponsor A Day For Daisies, little striped shirt and little striped dress. I thought to save time I would use watercolor paper and paint stripes as the background. But the watered down paint smeared the printer ink of my image. So Plan B was to create a digital background. It would have been faster to make my own paper, pick berries and crush them to make my own stains, and pick hairs from the back of a boar and bind them to a twig as a paintbrush, and then paint all 6 cards individually. I had a terrible time with the background strips. They were made, printed and cut out in my Silhouette. The box is another Silhouette cut file. I used double sided tape to put it together. I am going to add a monogram medallion to the front of the box and give this set away to the School Secretary. She is always in need of little gift cards for kids and has helped us with soooo many things I think a little thank-you is in order.

A Good Book

For my friend Vicky's birthday, I always like to make her something special. I decided to make her a corner bookmark this time. I wanted it to be vintage, romantic and inspire the imagination, everything a good book should do. I used the papers from MME Honey Cake 6x6 paper pad. I used the measurements from here. I don't have a scor-pal but I do have a scoring blade for my cutter. I actually found that just folding them by hand and using my ruler (I also don't have a bone folder) to flatten the folds gave me the best matched fold. In my Silhouette program, I took a 4x4 square and used the border called Moroccan border, overlapped them, and the welded them together so that I could cut out the square and border as all on piece of beige cardstock. My image is called book stack by Bugaboo stamps who are one of our sponsors this fortnight for our Crafting With Dragonflies challenge to use your scrap, at least 5 different dp's. Our other sponsor is Meljen's Designs. I paper pieced my image, using my scraps from my bookmark pieces. The lovely thing about this 6x6 paper pad is that the cardstock is double-sided, so it was very easy to use several different patterns and yet they all still coordinate. Thank goodness, because left to my own devices, I would still be trying to pick out papers, I am just not good at that. I used the offset feature of my Silhouette to create and cut out the peach cardstock mat around my image. I added a teal fleur-de-lis ribbon and my image on top of that. I always try to keep my bookmarks very 1 dimensional so as not to crease the spine of the book. I read that somewhere, but I'm pretty sure reading the book creases the spine, lol, but better safe than sorry.

A Halloween Birthday Party

I know not all parts of the world celebrate Halloween, but here in Canada it is on October 31st. Now that usually means we need to find a costume that can fit over a snowsuit. And some years they are so bundled up you have no idea what they are, lol. And yet we faithfully buy (or make) costumes, that they wear only once, for a few hours. So when my Kaylee decided her birthday party theme was going to be Halloween, I thought she was a genius! The kids can wear their costumes more than once, without a snowsuit, and I already had lots of decorations.
For her invitation, I typed it up and printed it onto Kraft cardstock. Then I took gauze bandages and stamped them with Tim Holtz distress inks in walnut. I wrapped them around the cardstock and tucked the end into the back. Then I used Skor tape to put googly eyes on them. Kaylee decided she needed girl and boy mummies, so fork bows were made for ribbon hair bows and bow ties. The really tricky part was wrapping so that the eyes were just a bit covered and stuck onto one piece of wrap so the kids could unwrap them. But they really turned out well.

 To decorate the house, I went to thrift stores and bought flat white sheets. I then put them over all the furniture in the living room. We bought 'potion' bottles at Michael's. All of their decorative glass bottles were 80% off and the Husband gets a teacher's discount besides. So we let the little girls pick out one of each color and some different sizes.
I bought cheesecloth and plastic spiders at the dollar store. Then hung the cheesecloth above the door using removal 3M hooks. We added the spiders. Cheesecloth also made the tablecloths for the living room coffee tables.

I always try to make a photo spot because I take a picture of all the kids that come to the party with Kaylee and then make up photo cards at Wal-Mart as thank-you cards. This time the Husband and I used white crepe paper to wrap one of our doors. I used my Silhouette to cut out the eyes (2 black circles and 2 larger white circles). I make it sound easy to wrap the door. It was not. It took over an hour because the large roll of crepe paper couldn't pass through the back of the door and we had to break and tape the roll at hinges, doorknob, lock, etc. Meanwhile the door was open most of the time. We let in a lot of flies. Thank goodness my Mother-in-law was here, so she was on fly swatting duty. I got a straw bale from my Dad and put a blanket on it. This became our photo spot.

I made most of Kaylee's peacock costume. For her skirt, I used a strip of black elastic and sewed Velcro to the ends of it. 3 different colors of tulle were used in her skirt. The front strips were cut 24" long and the back were cut to 40". Each strip was 3" wide. Tied each strip to the elastic using a lark's head knot. Basically, fold each strip in half and then place the halved tulle strip over the waistband so that only a few inches of the loop stick out over the top. Then fold the tail ends around the waistband and pull them through the loop. I had to Google the lark's head knot name, lol. We bought a spray of peacock feathers at Michael's and I attached them to the back with hot glue. I found a peacock ornament with metal wires on the feet that I wrapped around a blue headband for the top. She had a mask too, but we just couldn't make it work with her new glasses. The leggings and top were her own. My Abby was a Tinkerbell. How her Grandma got her superfine hair up into a bun is beyond me, but she looked cute as a button!

The kids all walked down to my Mom and Dad's to go trick or treating as their activity. Being that we are on the farm, we never get real trick or treaters, so my Mom and Dad went all out. They decorated their house too and bought pencils, erasers, lots of glow wands, and mini chocolate bars for all the children. All 12 of them! I gave each child a little trick or treat bag to take with them and my Mom filled it for them. My Mom and Dad also currently have 6 kittens. I had to phone to tell them to send all the children back for cake and snacks, lol. The kids would have gladly stayed and played there all night.
For birthday cake I made chocolate cupcakes and orange icing. Bought some dollar store rings which I pushed into the icing of the kids cupcakes. I also made 4 cupcakes without icing in case someone couldn't have food coloring, thankfully there was no one that came with any allergies. For those ones, I left them un-iced but used M&M's for the spooky eyes.

For a healthy snack to go with their cupcakes, I peeled Mandarin oranges, because peeled they really look like pumpkins. I also peeled bananas and cut them in half. Then I pushed chocolate chipits into them for eyes and a mouth. They looked like little ghosts. I forgot to take a picture of them but with some creative cropping I can show you what they looked like at least. Apologies for the next 2 pictures.

I made an orange punch and the little girls and Grandma put googly eyes on all the black and orange paper cups I'd bought. Sorry I didn't think to take a picture of them either so with more creative cropping and you can see them too, lol. Paper plates and plastic cutlery also from the dollar store. One of the perks of having the stores put out the next holidays decorations so ridiculously far in advance.

We had a fun party and I'm so glad we could have all the kids out to the farm, most of them are farm kids too so it was nice. But once they left we felt like we had just hosted 1000 children instead of 12. I'm sure if you've ever hosted a child's birthday party you know exactly what I mean. Thanks for visiting!

Back To School

Well this morning I put both of my little girls on the school bus. I was not ready. I'm sure you've all heard the phrase, "Good parents give their children roots and wings." by Jonas Salk. That's what I kept repeating this morning, roots and wings, roots and wings. The Husband also left for school today too (he's a teacher) and I was not as sad to see him go after 2 months home of together time. He is very helpful when he's home and I appreciate it but sometimes absence and the heart, well you know. I made this mini album of the girls for him to take back to school with him.
This fortnight at Crafting With Dragonflies we are challenging you to make a mini album. 3 pages is enough, more is completely up to you. I used a Silhouette cut file of an album box and 3 live, laugh, love journal cards. I welded the 3 cards together and then drew perforated lines between them. I then cut out 2 of them, one out of blue cardstock the other out of yellow. Then I deleted all the word blocks and cut it out once more from a bright pink cardstock. Glued the blue to the pink and the yellow to pink on the other side and had myself an album. For the labels/frames I used another cut file that I wrote the text questions and answers on and then used the print and cut feature. I have blurred the text but you get the idea. Each year we've taken the girls for some portraits and I used a photo from each of those years. Their pictures matched up pretty well with the sentiments too.
Daddy was very happy to get his album and keeps it on his desk at school.

I used Sassy Studio's Wonder Sassy for the front of my card. She is colored with Prismacolor pencils. My star dp is from MME's lime twist Out Of The Blue. I used the zig zag stitch on my sewing machine with some gold thread to do the stitching. Blue glitter paper and gold mirrored paper are the other two papers used. The star border is a Silhouette cut file as are the gold stars and speech bubble. I added the text to my speech bubble and used the print and cut feature of my Silhouette.
For the inside, I again used print and cut for both my sentiment (word bubble) and image. I colored Gus from Bugaboo Stamps using Prismacolor pencils and put some Glossy Accents on his glasses. Added a red check mark for good measure, and cheek ;)

Flowers From Trees

Our challenge this fortnight at Crafting With Dragonflies is to alter something. We are sponsored by Kenny K and Crafts and Me. I chose to use altered elements on my card. Some of my other teamies chose to alter objects. I look forward to seeing your interpretation of this challenge! Please remember to be a follower of our challenge blog so as not to miss out on any of the great prizes.
I used the image Unstoppable Mom by Kenny K for my card and colored her with Prismacolor pencils. I also paper pieced her shopping bags with Kraft paper. Wanted to stick with the recycling theme. Then I printed her onto a Silhouette cut file frame and added the Happy Birthday text before cutting. Distressed the frame and used some Tim Holtz distress ink in broken china around the edges.
Some navy blue cardstock and my script embossing folder make the base. For my altered elements I took a cardboard box and cut a 4"x4" square (my card is 5"x5"). Then I ripped the top layer off of the cardboard. This can leave quite a bit of paper stuck down still but I just picked it off. Then I used white acrylic paint to distress it a little further.

Next came my flowers from trees. I used the pages of a book to make my flowers (get it, flowers from trees, well they used to be trees, lol). I felt a little guilty cutting pages from a book but I made sure I chose a story I didn't like. That helped my conscience a little. I followed this tutorial here and I used Tim Holtz distress inks in walnut stain and antique linen to mark up my pages a bit.

Then cut out 10 scallop shapes 1.75" using my Silhouette. 5 from each page so that I would have an equal amount of both colors of stain.

Pile your shapes up, I alternated the stains, and put a brad through the center.

Then begin scrunching. Start with the top flower layer and scrunch away all the way to the bottom one.
